Cars, explosions, a roaring soundtrack, Dungarees, lighter fluid, and… a good cry? The Sundance favorite Bellflower defies categorization in the broad strokes, but its new trailer pitches the film as something of a study in fragility tucked in a destruction derby. Let’s judge this clip, which I’ve already entitled Twisted Metal V: Feelings.
Strange reading the praise from critics, particularly the “I marveled at how real it all seemed” nugget, because the acting here seems… downright stilted? That romantic badinage was… cloying and too serious? It’s hard to make definitive claims about the thespian abilities at play here since the editing dices up any cogency into shards, but the gritty interstitial sequences give this material some promise. It’s spiky emotional drama for the Spike TV set!
Bellflower is released on Aug. 5.
